Tell us about your event, what is the purpose and concept behind the event?
Our event was a celebration of diversity and inclusion in the mining industry and of Christmas in July. We were fortunate to have 3 wonderful panellists, Craig Jetson Executive General Manager Newcrest Mining, Jeannette McGill, Head of Telstra Mining Services and Shayne Elliott Executive Officer of ANZ. Their discussion was facilitated by Angela Pippos, well known sports journalist and promoter of women and inclusion.
The luncheon was a great opportunity to hear how they promote diversity within their organisations and to benefit from their experience as change leaders in their organisations.
How often do you run your lunches? And who is invited to attend?
We try and run events every 2 months however this is our largest event for the year. We are fortunate in that our events are generally well attended by a range of people usually connected in some way to the resource sector. The diversity of the attendees is often driven by the speaker, and the topic.
You had a fantastic line up of speakers, what did they have in common with each other?
Thank you. The common theme was the role they take as advocates and change leaders for diversity within the workplace, and for the support they provide to the female leaders in their business, and to the development of future female leaders in the business. On a personal note, I enjoyed hearing their personal stories about the actions they take as individuals to promote to diversity and to lead by example and ‘walk the talk’.
What made you choose a Christmas In July theme? What special touches did you do organise to theme the room?
We wanted an event that could be run in the idle of the year and perhaps allow for a bit of ‘fun’ and quirky-ness. We thought it was a fun festive way to raise awareness of an important issue. We included bon bons on the table, and we had a Christmas tree in the room. To add to the theme we also projected a photograph slideshow of our families and workmates celebrating Christmas.
What was an ‘experience worth sharing’ that you had while at River’s Edge?
The staff at Rivers Edge exceeded our expectations. Their provided warm and very attentive service. Guests who arrived later at our table were offered a welcome drink, dietary requirements were met, the meals were delivered to the right people and the meals were lovely. We really loved the mocktails – they were cheerful and a great way to start our event. As the event was during lunchtime on a weekday and the efficiency and organisation of the service was important so that we could enjoy the panellists, and those that needed to could still make afternoon commitments.
